Hello from the President’s office (aka the sewing room)!

I’m looking forward to seeing each of you and your crayon challenges this month! I’ve already seen a few of them and they are amazing. We have a great meeting planned for February. Be sure to check out all the details below!

See you soon!
Melody H., president

Upcoming meetings:

February Guild Meeting - Tuesday, Feb 13 at 6:30pm
To start the meeting, we’ll have announcements, offer tickets for the 50/50 raffle, and judging for everyone’s entry for our Crayon Challenge by all the members of the MVQG! Don’t forget your crayons along with your entry. Prizes will be awarded at the end of the meeting for first, second and third place. View challenge details here.

Then at 7pm, Shari Brindley, MVQG member and owner of Sharing Stitches, will give a lecture called “Creative Transitions”. She will take us on a trip down memory lane that will help us create through our joys and grief. Winter can be a perfect opportunity to heal and remember our loves. For many it is a sad or lonely season. Shari has bright thoughts to help with both of those.

Please note, we have the meeting space starting at 10am. If anyone wants to join for an open sew or meet with your challenge groups, feel free to use the building! The retreat committee will be meeting at 3:30pm that day too.

March Guild Meeting – Tuesday, March 12 at 6:30pm
Deb Porter, long-armer and machine embroidery pro from Virginia, will be visiting for a lecture and trunk show on orphan blocks and creative quilt ideas! Her ability to turn odd pieces into stunning and useful works of art will be a breath of fresh ideas! Sign up for her informal orphan blocks workshop on Wednesday, March 13 and her Three Ways to Cathedral Windows workshop on Thursday, March 14 - only $25 each for guild members!

From the Vice President (& Workshops):
We have a fun filled year planned for 2024! Pat will continue taking signups for our workshops with Deb Porter in March, Linda Hahn in April, and Liz Grandberg-Jerome in June. Be sure to get to the meeting a little early to learn more about each and sign up, so we can start on time! You can also view our calendar on the website for more details here.

Bonnie Moore has begun the planning for our skills hop for August! If you would like to help or volunteer to teach a skill, technique, ruler, or pattern please see Bonnie asap. This will be a fun way to brush up on our skills, share, and have fun at the same time.

Looking forward to a great year of learning and continuing to get to know you all! - Mary Ann C., Vice President

Sunshine ☀️
Just as a reminder, if you know someone who is sick, lost a loved one or could use a little cheer, please send me their name and I will gladly send a card from the guild. This is a gesture put in place to spread sunshine to our members and will be kept private. Email me at [email protected] or you can call or text me at 937-623-4934.

Thank you, Barb W., QOV Chair

Community Quilts
We have been informed that the Ronald McDonald House of Dayton is expanding and will be opening the expansion in August.  They would like to collect 1000 quilts of all sizes.  If anyone has a quilt or two that they would like to donate, please bring it to the meetings and I will collect them.  I would imagine that they would like bed size (twin and up) but smaller ones for children would be welcomed also.

Thank you, Carol G., Community Quilts Chair

Quilts of Valor
To wrap up my first year, our team made 116 quilts and 65 quilts were presented! Our upcoming sew-ins are below. Please contact me by email if you plan to attend any sew-ins. If weather is bad and I feel it’s unsafe to drive, I will email the night before or the morning of if we need to cancel.

  • February 21 at Crestview Baptist Church in Clayton from 10am – 3pm. Bring a lunch, as there is nothing close by.
  • March 7 at Sharing Stitches in Xenia from 10am – 3pm. Bring a lunch or Super Subby’s is right across the street.
  • March 20 at Crestview Baptist Church in Clayton from 10am – 3pm. Bring a lunch, as there is nothing close by.

Happy Sewing, Patty H., QOV Chair

Retreat
I am so looking forward to the retreat! The weather forecast is a bit cold, but no rain or snow. Perfect time to sew! We have an opening for the retreat. If you’d like to join us, please contact Carol Gibson asap at [email protected].

Here are a few reminders for you:
  • If you are staying at the hotel, you will not be able to check in until all the rooms are ready. It will be after lunch and we will announce when they are ready. Please leave your luggage in your vehicle if possible.
  • Retreat check-in begins about 9am on Saturday. Team members will help you find your table, bring in your supplies and machine. As you pack, it’s better to have lightweight boxes and bags. We will have some carts to use, but if you have one, or can borrow one, that would be very helpful!
  • The chairs provided by the hotel aren’t the most comfortable and do not roll or adjust. If you have a chair to bring from home, it may be more comfortable for you.

It will be a Flamazing Retreat Quilting with Our Besties! 🦩
Thanks, Cindy R., Retreat Chair

2024 Quilt Show
Visit the MVQG Facebook page and to share our 2024 Quilt Show Facebook event with your friends to help spread the word!

We are preparing for Scrap City - Don't forget your scraps to any of the meetings until the show to donate! Sheila will be happy to take them off your hands!

We have multiple volunteer opportunities available below – from concession, other quilt show duties, to the One Stop Shop Hop and more. Please help where you can!

  • Deanna Taylor, concession chair, is looking for a helper, a right hand person. It would be helpful to have another person that has full knowledge of how things need to run in the kitchen during the show. If interested, please see her at the meeting or give her a call. We will still have sign-ups for shifts in the kitchen as well.
  • Sign-up sheets will be available at the February meeting for different jobs at the quilt show. We will also have them available at the retreat and all future meetings up to the show. There are a variety of jobs available, some require more activity than others, choose the one that you think suits you best. We welcome all the help we can get!
  • We still have slots available at the raffle ticket booth in April for the One Stop Shop Hop. Those sign-up sheets will also be available.
  • If you are going to be out of town or are unable to volunteer for the quilt show but would still like to help. We are taking donations for the concession area. Examples are a case of water, soda, napkins, plates, utensils etc.
  • If you are a member of another guild or planning a trip to a quilt shop or two and would be willing to take bookmarks with you, it would be appreciated. Sets of bookmarks will be available at the meeting. Fliers have been distributed to most of our vendors and several guilds so far, but we would like to expand our reach. If you are unable to make the meeting and would still like a stack please contact Emilie, 937-608-8246.

Thanks, Emilie T, Quilt Show Chair
