August E-News

  • Our next Guild meeting is on Tuesday, 8 August at 6:30 p.m.  We will start on time.  Our meetings are always held the 2nd Tuesday of the month.
Reminder**** This month our meeting place has changed.
  • As a result of the Ohio Special Election on 8 Aug, the MVQG meeting will be moved to an alternate location (Bethel Community Church of the Nazarene, 4400 Osborn Rd, Medway).   We have used this location for workshops and is convenient and ample space for our August meeting.  Enon Knob Prairie church will be a polling location on that date and not available to the Guild.
  • Please find your name badge and wear it to Guild meetings.  It is a good way to get to know each other, an ice-breaker for new folks, and a conversation starter.  Lost your Guild name badge?  Make one!  Get creative – but prominently display your name!
  • We are always looking for volunteers!   A need for a “Sunshine Committee” Chair is sought to be a central place for the Guild to recognize major events in the lives of our members by sending get-well/well-wishes cards and staying in touch with members during these events. Please see Michelle P or Deb B if you are interested.  There are also multiple other support activities if you would like to be more involved with the Guild.  Please see any of the Committee members at the Guild meeting if you can help.
  • 50/50 Raffle:  We are once again doing the 50/50 raffle.  Please acquire your tickets prior to the speaker beginning at 7:00 p.m.
  • Become a sponsor of the Guild!  For Quilting Businesses – advertising in the Miami Valley Guild Website is an excellent way to reach the hundreds of people who are Guild members!  Become a Sponsor – yearly cost is just $20 year.  Please contact our newest volunteer, Lindsay N, Advertising Chair at the Guild meeting or by clicking on the email icon below.

Guild Meeting

August:  Karen Miller, Redbird Quilt Co will present Aurifilosophy Slide Show and Quilt Show.   Ms Miller is an Aurifil Designer and will showcase her many artful designs with the use of Aurifil threads, exploring the nature and behavior of these threads.  Please view her web site (redbirdquiltco.com) for some sampling of her beautiful creations.  She will be presenting many of these and more at our August meeting.  As stated on her web site, she plans to “share her Aurifil-centric trunk of quilts, a wealth of guilty information and inspiration, exclusive Aurifil resources, and swag”.  Please note as well, Ms. Miller will be hosting a workshop the following day to share her free-motion quilting (FMQ) knowledge as a simple panel is used to embellish with FMQ using Aurifil thread.  You will learn FMQ techniques using your own sewing machine and take away a beautiful small panel quilt using FMQ.  Please see MaryAnn or Pat during this meeting if you are still interested in attending the workshop.

Upcoming Events:

September:  It is Basket Auction time!   Many of you may have participated in this fun and exciting event last year.  This is so much fun and a wonderful fun-raiser for the guild!  Please consider being part of the fun by contributing a basket for this auction.   All you need to do, either as individuals or as a team, is to fill the basket with quality items.  You can base your basket on a theme (sewing, food, health and wellness – just examples) or no theme at all – you or your teams’ basket can be whatever you want – let’s just ensure the baskets are quality, sought-after items!  Size of the basket is up to you! This is a way for creativity and quality to add to good-natured competition for sought-after baskets at the auction. The more baskets we have – the more fun!  Be sure to bring lots of quarters with you – we will have limited quarters available for purchase.  Sherry G is running this event and will have much more information at our Guild meeting.

October:  We are very happy to announce that in October we will have Laura Gilmartin from Virginia as our guest presenter, who will also host two teaching workshop events.  Laura is an award-winning thread painting and Tsinko inks artist. You will be impressed with her knowledge and tips. This is a great way to add to your project knowledge. We are very fortunate of have acquired Laura and her time!  She was interested in seeing the shop hop at the Nutter Center which is occurring at this same time and was gracious to provide teaching opportunities for our Guild members during this time she is in the local area.  Very special for us as she will not be teaching at the Nutter, but instead with our Guild.

Her presentation/lecture at our MVQG October meeting is titled "Art is a Many Splendored Seam”.

In addition, she will be instructing two hands-on workshops/classes.  Space will be limited, so sign up early!   The two classes she is offering are (see Calendar for pics):

Tsinko Inks Tulip Class:  Wednesday, October 11:  12:30-4:30, Bethel Location.  Cost $45 for MVQG members; $55 for non-members.

Landscape Choices for Thread Painting: Thursday, Oct 12:  9:00 a.m.-4:00pm, Bethel Location, Cost $60 for MVQG members; $70 for non-members.

Please make sure you are signed up for one or both by the August meeting. Lead-time is needed well-ahead of the October workshops to prep for these workshops. Once the classes are paid and confirmed, we will send out the supply lists.  Classes will be at Bethel Community Church in Medway. We usually do a group lunch for this workshop site. If you have any suggestions or contribution, please talk with Mary Ann C. or Pat H. either at the Guild meeting or directly by phone.

Announcements:
Our next Guild meeting is on Tuesday, 11 July at 6:30.  We will start on-time.
  • As a result of the Ohio Special Election in August, the MVQG meeting will be moved to an alternate location (Bethel Community Church of the Nazarene, 4400 Osborn Rd, Medway).   We have used this location for workshops and is good, convenient and ample space for our August meeting.  Enon Knob Prairie Church will be a polling location on that date and not available to the Guild.
  • We are encouraging you to please find your name badge and wear it to Guild meetings.   If you wear your name tag to the July meeting, we plan on holding a drawing for a quilting related prize.  It is a good way to get to know each other, an ice-breaker for new folks, and a conversation starter.  Lost your Guild name badge?  Make one!  Get creative – but prominently display your name!  Any badge with your name displayed counts!  We may periodically run other drawings, but they will be unannounced.  Best to come prepared with your name badge to each meeting.
  • We are always looking for volunteers!   There are also multiple other support activities if you would like to be more involved with the Guild.  Please see any of the Committee members at the Guild meeting if you can help.
  • On the Road Again Quilt Challenge:  The challenge has begun; multiple teams have been formed.  It is not too late to join in!  Participation, of course, is optional, but this is fun and challenging!  New members most welcome to join in…. a great way to team up and get to know folks.  See website for more information. Mary Ann Clifford (Vice President), who is coordinating this challenge, requests that each group turn in their quilt challenge teams to Pat Hayes, who is filling in for Mary Ann at the July meeting. Pat will have blank forms if needed.
  • Become a sponsor of the Guild!  For Quilting Businesses – advertising in the Miami Valley Guild Website is an excellent way to reach the hundreds of people who are Guild members!  Become a Sponsor – yearly cost is just $20 year.  Please contact our newest volunteer, Lindsay Nicholson, Advertising Chair at (937) 232-9335.

Guild Meeting
  • Announcements
  • Skills Hop.  Several volunteers have stepped forward to show off skills and talents with sewing/quilting/shortcuts for a Skills Hop Evening of fun and good exchange of talent.   Come on out to enjoy 15-minute skill building workshops.  At the end of each 15-minute period, a timer will go off and you will move along to another.  A good time to socialize and learn (or share) new ideas.  This will be a fun event!  Please plan to join in!  Here is the current line-up:
    • Shelly B – Quilt as you go
    • Joni K - Deco Foiling
    • Sherry G – Two-sided binding
    • Michelle P – Presentation pillow cases
    • Unknown Name – English Paper Piecing.  I thought someone had stood up in the June meeting volunteering to do EPP.  Please contact me prior to the meeting if you still plan to present EPP.

  • Due to the Skills Hop and allowing time for show and tell, the 50/50% raffle will not occur in July; however, we will continue this next month.
  • If time allows, we will have a ‘show and tell”!  Please bring your works of art to show to others.  We are all inspired to see all the beautiful quilts, bags, and other unique items made by all the creative folks.
