I look forward to meeting and getting to know each of you! Michelle and I look forward to "Our Year of the M&M's" !!! Stay Blessed, Mary Ann C., Vice President Info on Dalphene Parks/February Speaker Ms. Dalphene Parks comes to us from a very travelled path from her Tennessee roots thru Utah, California and settling down in White Oak, Virginia. She is a prolific quilter. Her walls sport ribbons from fairs and quilt shows with her recent addition of the National Quilters Award of Merit. She is known for her talent with feed sacks and Kaffee Fassette fabrics, as well as scrappy pieced originals. With decades of experience, Ms. Dalphene is a delight to be around. Ever so humble she is a country girl who grows flower bulbs and posies. Whether that is in her garden or her heart, you will find a treasure to take home with you! She is as generous a heart as you will find. So come fill your heart with her love and joy of all things pieced! Be sure to sign up at the January meeting for her very affordable workshops. I'm sure they will fill quickly. Quilt of Valor News The year 2023 will be a year of change for Quilts of Valor, but has the potential to be the best year yet! I recently announced that I would be stepping aside after ten years of leading the Quilts of Valor Project for the guild. Fortunately, Patty H. (who has been involved for many years) has accepted the role of Coordinator, and we are all looking forward to her new ideas and great energy in continuing to inspire and organize all of us to honor our military. We are on hiatus during the month of January, and Patty and I will be transitioning the supplies and paperwork during February. Quilt of Valor Sew-Ins will resume in March (Patty will send that news in February), as will awards and presentations. I know that the wonderful guild support will continue for this project!! So here are the numbers for 2022: 81 Quilts of Valor awarded 23 National Website Requests 16 Guild Requests 5 4 Paws for Ability Requests 6 20th Helicopter Ops Reunion Requests (St. Louis Reunion - this will be in Dayton this year in August!) 15 Crestview Baptist Church (Clayton) Requests 16 Beavercreek Senior Center Requests 31 Army 28 Air Force 15 Navy 7 Marines (First year ever that there has been more Army than Air Force awards!) Many thanks to all of you individually for your overwhelming participation - piecing, quilting, binding, making and writing labels, block drives, awarding quilts, donating fabrics, money, and time, etc. During these 10 years, together we have awarded over 600 Quilts of Valor in the Miami Valley and beyond. My fondest takeaway from these years has been the friendships made and deepened, both within the guild and with the award recipients and their families. Being a part of the healing and comfort that these quilts bring is so rewarding and I hope that you all have the opportunity to be involved in some way this year! Debbie G., QOV Chair Raffle Quilt News Just a reminder to those of you who graciously took one or more of the blocks for the raffle quilt to work on. I have been very honored to be your President for the second time around and I know I’m handing this position off to someone who will do an outstanding job. Please welcome Michelle, as well as Mary Ann (new VP), as they will begin in January. I look forward to new and fresh ideas in the future. Happy Holidays to all and see you at our potluck. Sherry G, President News from Vice President Our December Potluck will begin at 6 p.m. Please bring a dish to share for 6-8 people; all utensils will be provided, along with decaf coffee, lemonade, and water. Don't forget to bring your Christmas block - see information below and on the website; it's not too late to make one or more! Lastly, we will have Show and Tell. Don't forget about the scrap bag challenge as well; information is on the website as well. This is my last newsletter entry before passing the VP role onto Mary Ann. [See bios below for information about our newly appointed President and Vice President.] Thank you to our outgoing president, Sherry G. Mary Lou, and everyone for your assistance and participation in this past year's classes, lectures, and activities. I know there will be more exciting adventures to come. Sandy H, Vice President Christmas Block Challenge Bring your completed block(s) to the Christmas Potluck; you will receive a ticket for each block made (limit 3) for the chance to win the entire bundle of blocks. There will be one or two winners depending on the number of overall blocks submitted. Winner(s) are asked to bring the quilt top to the June meeting to share and will receive a $50 gift card to purchase backing and batting to finish your quilt. Christmas Block Instructions Retreat News We are only 2 months away from our retreat and plans are moving along smoothly. Cindy will be arriving early to the December meeting in case anyone wants to pay their balance due. All monies should be paid in full by the January meeting and all attendees need to make sure that they have paid their 2023 membership dues. Carol G, Retreat Chair Community Quilts Carol delivered 30 quilts to Hospice, 15 to Jeremiah's Letter who works with the homeless and another 15 to the Family & Youth Initiatives who work with families on parenting. She also has another 13 holiday themed quilts to take to Hospice. In all, we have donated over 200 quilts to various organizations this year! Thank you and great work ladies! A special thank you to Connie Combs who does a lot of the quilting for both Community Quilts and Quilts of Valor! Also, thank you to all of you who help with the bindings. This is truly a community effort! Carol Gibson, Community Quilts Chair BIOS ON OUR NEWLY APPOINTED PRESIDENT AND VICE PRESIDENT I am thrilled to be involved with the Miami Valley Quilting Guild and excited to be your next President. I have been a member of the Guild for 4 months! I joined to make new friends and learn more about quilting. What a surprise to now find I am very much jumping into the Guild in this role as President. I dabbled in quilting many years ago while living in Los Angeles. During this time, I made just one quilt…it never really took hold and at the time, I had a very busy civilian career working for the Air Force. But I had acquired a small stash of projects, which moved with me several times and I kept my used Bernina 1560. Fast forward about 18 years… I retired in 2018 and now had lots of free time. And then COVID isolation hit in early 2020…perfect time to unpack those projects and my machine that I had been carting with me for so many years. I am now hooked! In these past 2 years, I have made many quilts, bags, table runners…and acquired a wonderful Bernina 820…you get the picture. I love this art! I look forward to growing my skills and precision, and learning and friendships. I am very fortunate to be partnering with Mary Ann, who was also elected last month as Vice President. Together we will make a good team. We have a great year ahead. I look forward to this next year. Michelle P, President-elect **************************************************************************** As Michelle stated, we are VERY excited for what the New Year will bring! I look forward to meeting you all and making new friends. My husband has lived in Medway for many years and is the local C.P.A. He was previously G.S. and retired from the Air Force at Wright Patterson. I moved here from Pennsylvania. Previously I had lived in Virginia. I belonged to quilt guilds and church groups in both places. Being a military family means you learn to grow where you are planted. I have travelled the world since I was 17 because of the military and my job with Amtrak. I recently retired after 33+ years. I'm happy to be home! I am new to MVQG. I helped to intake quilts for the show and then joined as a member. I found the group to be friendly and generous. Your helpful nature won me over immediately! I have loved quilting since I was a child taking naps under my grandmother's quilt frame during the quilting bees. I hope we will have time to enjoy a few more of those. Lol! Please let me know what interests you. I am a physical versus digital girl. I will be setting up a suggestion box at the meeting so I won't miss any of your input. I look forward to our year as a team. Thanks for your support. Mary Ann C, Vice President-elect Reminder that, due to the church being a polling location, we will NOT be meeting next week. Our next meeting will be December 13 and will begin at 6 p.m. for our potluck.
News from President Hi, everyone! Have a wonderful and blessed Thanksgiving and see you in December at our potluck get together. Remember, we will have more $5 bags for sale and a show and tell. Sherry G, President Congratulations to our new President and Vice President! Be sure to welcome our newest President and Vice President at the December potluck: Michelle P. as President and Mary Ann C. as Vice President. These two ladies stepped up at the October meeting and the guild members unanimously welcomed them aboard. Congratulations and we look forward to great things. News from Vice President Reminder about our two challenges. Fabric Bag Challenge Using fabric scrap bags purchased at the October guild meeting, create a unique quilt using the guidelines below. You will receive a ticket for each block made (limit 3) for a chance to win the entire bundle of blocks. There will be one or two winners, depending on number of overall blocks submitted. Winner(s) are asked to bring the quilt top to the June meeting to share. Winner(s) are given a $50 gift card in order to purchase backing and batting to complete the quilt(s). Guidelines are included under Challenges on the website. Shelly B., MVQG Communications Coordinator News from President and Vice President
October’s meeting will prove to be a busy time, please see the following: 6-7 p.m. Retreat sign-ups AND fabric bag sales. 7 p.m. Meeting begins with the following: New President nominations AND Vice President nominations.
Sherry G., President and Sandy H., Vice President Community Quilts At the October meeting, I will have some more quilts that need binding. Since we don't have a meeting in November due to Election Day, I would ask that if you take a quilt to bind that you wait to return it to me in January. Due to the holidays and guests coming to my house, I won't have room to store them and I won't have time to take them to be donated. Thanks. Carol G., Community Quilts Chair Quilt Retreat 2023 Just a reminder that we will begin taking registrations for the Quilting with My Peeps retreat at the October meeting. As many of you know, these spots fill up quickly and we only have 78 spots available. You will need to make at least the $50 deposit in order to pick your seat. Be sure to choose your seat carefully. Spots fill up quickly and you won’t be able to request a different spot later. If you want to sit with friends, they will need to be present and pay their deposit or you can bring their deposit with you. The committee is working to make this another great retreat and look forward to Quilting with our Peeps! Carol G., Retreat Chair Quilt Show 2024 Raffle quilt block kits will be available at the October meeting to sign out for you to take home and work on. Each block is paper pieced and we ask that they be returned without trimming being done. Deadline for completion and return is the January meeting. There are 25 blocks total so your help would be greatly appreciated. If for any reason you complete the blocks prior to January and would like to turn them in or can’t make the January meeting, please reach out to me and arrangements can be made to get the blocks from you. Thank you! Emilie T., Quilt Show Chair Quilt of Valor News The October 11 guild meeting is our turn-in date for our Scrap Busting Block Drive! We have 20 members who are participating and we look forward to seeing the blocks that everyone has made! Some of you have already turned in your blocks and we have made a few tops already with some of the sets. If you already turned in your blocks, please stop by the QOV table at the meeting to pick up your "Thank You"! If your blocks are not done, or you won't be at the meeting, please e-mail me and we can work out an alternative solution. Thank you to all who participated!! The other big news is that we have a new Quilts of Valor coordinator! Patty H., a guild member who has long worked with our Quilt of Valor group in sew-ins and presentations, has volunteered to lead the project beginning in March 2023!! Patty has mega sewing experience, has a son who is in the military, and she worked at Wright-Patt for many years. She will be a natural at this! We are very excited that she is willing to lead and organize the project. I will continue with sew-ins, presentations, etc. until the end of December. Patty will have neck surgery right after Christmas and will be recuperating for about a month afterwards. The two of us will make the transition of fabric, patterns, computer work, etc. in February and she'll begin sew-ins, presentations, etc. in March. I know that our "regulars" have already pledged their support for Patty, and know that the rest of the guild will as well! Right now, we have two sew-ins a month - one at Sharing Stitches in Xenia and one at Crestview Baptist Church in Clayton. We have kept these sew-ins small during the COVID time, but if you are interested in participating, please let me know! Debbie G, Quilts of Valor Coordinator debgins@aol.com Announcement A fellow guild member wanted to pass along that the owner, Darlene Griffith, of Quilted Christmas, is going out of business. In an effort to downsize her inventory, she is putting hundreds and hundreds of bolts on sale for $6/yd. More importantly, though, she has decided to entertain shoppers in her home on an appointment basis. You are sure to have fun perusing bolts upon bolts of all types of high quality fabrics. Her home is located in Germantown. Please contact her through her website QUILTEDCHRISTMAS.COM to set up your excursion. Guild meeting is coming up Tuesday, September 13, beginning at 7 p.m. Lots going on the next few months. Carefully read the E-News for important information.
NEWS FROM THE PRESIDENT Happy Autumn, everyone! Don’t forget to turn in your budgets for next year. You know who you are. For those that may not know or as a reminder, we need a new President AND a new Vice President starting in January 2023. Please consider stepping up to fill these positions. Our October meeting plan is to have some demos and show and tell. In addition, we will be selling $5 bags of fabric and may even have a challenge coming your way. We will also reveal our Christmas block for December’s luncheon. Remember, there is NO meeting in November. Sherry G, President NEWS FROM THE VICE PRESIDENT Tuesday, September 13, Gyleen X. Fitzgerald, quilter and writer, will give her presentation: Path to Modern. On Wednesday, September 14, Gyleen will teach her Caribbean Star 2 class from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Cost - Guild Members - $45, Non-Guild Members - $50. There is also a pattern fee and required tool; both may be purchased from Gyleen. There are 5 openings for Gyleen's class. Please remember our new policy pertaining to workshop/class cancellations. But after looking at class fees for the Houston International Quilt Show, very few classes are less than $75 with all day classes ranging from $75 to $175. We are very fortunate to have Gyleen and may other national and/or international teachers. There will be no show and tell for September due to our having a national speaker. Looking ahead to our October meeting. It would be great to have you, our talented guild members, share some easy and fun Christmas gift ideas. Please send me an email at mvqgvp22@gmail.com if you would like to participate in a short demo. Show and tell will return at this meeting. Sandy H, Vice President MEMBERSHIP Be sure to let me know if you have changed your email or other contact information so your membership record remains up to date. Thanks. Tere H, Membership RETREAT TIME! It is time to start thinking about our annual retreat. The Retreat Committee has been working on our plan to make sure you have a great retreat. The Retreat will be held at the Wingate Hotel in Fairborn February 18-20, 2023. The theme this year is "Quilting with My Peeps". Click here for registration packet information. We will start taking registrations at our October 11 meeting beginning at 6 p.m. We will have the seating chart there and you will be able to pick your spot, providing, of course, that you have paid your $50 deposit. Spots fill up quickly so if you have plans to sit with friends, make sure you all get your registrations and $50 in early to ensure that you get a spot. We are all looking forward to the retreat and hope that you can join us this year. Carol G, Retreat Chair QUILTS OF VALOR I hope that all of you who signed up are working on your blocks for our Scrap Busting Block Drive!! Please bring your blocks to the OCTOBER meeting - looking forward to seeing how everyone uses their scraps! Thank you for participating! We continue to work on our two big QOV presentations for the fall - 7 quilts for Crestview Baptist Church in Clayton for October and 14 quilts for the Beavercreek Senior Center in November. Thanks to all who are helping with piecing, quilting, and binding (and making pillowcases)! Things are going according to schedule! So, now to the hard part - some of you know that the Ginsburgs are in the process of building a house (getting on one floor, 5 miles away from where we live now), which will hopefully be finished by March-April 2023. Between the building of the house, decluttering and packing up the present house, moving, then getting the present house ready to sell, much has been added to our lives. Because of that, there has to be some subtraction of other things. After coordinating our Quilts of Valor project for the last 10 years, I will be stepping aside at the end of this year. Together, we have honored so many veterans and I'm grateful to all of you for this shared endeavor. Because we have had such great participation in this project, I am hoping that one (or two) people will feel called (as I really do believe that it is a ministry) to coordinate and lead the group/guild in continuing our work, as there are many veterans and active military in the area who would love to be honored with a Quilt of Valor! We have great systems and resources in place, so it is not something where you have to "reinvent the wheel", (plus I'm a phone call away for consultation). The friendships that have been made will always be treasured, and are a wonderful by-product of all of our hard work. If you are interested in helping to continue this project, I can fill you in with the details. Debbie G Quilts of Valor Coordinator debgins@aol.com OTHER NEWS Remembrance Quilt Guild in Springfield, will be holding a basket/container auction on Monday, September 26, 2022 at 6:30 p.m. at Northminster Church on Villa Road. Please send me an email at mvqgvp22@gmail.com if you would like to participate in a short demo. Show and tell will return at this meeting. Sandy H, Vice President Quilts of Valor What a wonderful response to our Scrap Busting Block Drive!! We have 17 quilters signed up to make 12 blocks from our scraps (6 fat quarters each). Blocks will be due at the October guild meeting. Each kit will come with more detailed instructions. Be sure to pick up your kit at the July meeting! If you can't be there, please try to have someone else pick it up for you. We do have a few extra kits, so if you didn't get signed up and would like to participate, please e-mail me at debgins@aol.com. We are already working on a group award for the Beavercreek Senior Center around Veterans Day. If you can help by machine quilting a top, please let me know. We have many additional requests that we are trying to fulfill, and would love to get our tops made into quilts, so that we can honor those who have given so much for our country! Thank you all for your continued support of Quilts of Valor! Debbie G, Quilts of Valor Coordinator News from President
Spring has sprung and here comes summer, please keep hydrated at all times. I want to again welcome all of our new members. We had a very successful quilt show and now the reigns have been passed on to Emilie Theriot and two co-chairs. Speaking for Shari and myself, we had the pleasure of heading up 3 quilt shows with one being cancelled due to the pandemic. Please consider helping again in two years. In the mean time we have 3 more speakers this year coming our way, our Holiday carry-in for members only in December and our next retreat in February 2023. See you soon, Gorby News from Vice President Sandi Blackwell is joining us this month; she will bring many of her wares to sell Tuesday evening at our meeting. The workshop for Wednesday is full. Sharon Resvick will be with us in July for a presentation. Signups began last month for Catherine Redmond in August and Gyleen Fitzgerald in September. Please remember, if you sign up for a workshop and are unable to attend, let me know asap. A month is preferable for a refund; within two weeks, we cannot guarantee a refund. We understand that life happens, however, this is a common practice and last-minute cancellations doesn’t allow for filling the seat. This ultimately costs the guild and causes us to pay the difference since our teachers charge a flat rate. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks! Sandy H, Vice President Quilts of Valor After an absence of two years (you all know why!), Quilts of Valor Block Drive is BACK!! This one is going to be run a little differently this year - I'm really trying to reduce our scrap piles! 1) Block Drive starts at the July 12 meeting and you will hand in your blocks at the October 11 meeting. You will be given a bag with at least 6 compatible fat quarters in it. Your assignment is to add your own background and make 12 of the same block (with the different fabrics) in it. Blocks should be 12½ " UNFINISHED. The block pattern is your choice - classic, stars, connecting blocks (such as 9 patch or Irish Chain), etc. With the blocks being coordinated, it should be easy to finish into QOV tops at the monthly sew-ins. 2) The block drive runs 12 weeks - a block a week! If you are interested, you will need to sign up at the June 14 meeting, so that I will know how many kits to make up. If you won't be at the meeting, but want to sign up, send me an e-mail (debgins@aol.com) letting me know by June 15. Kits will be passed out at the July 12 meeting. Each kit will have more detailed instructions, but if you have questions, please feel free to e-mail me. Speaking of QOV sew-ins, we are in the process of resuming them on a limited basis. Because of some space restrictions, we are keeping them small right now, as we work out the transitions. So the people who have been sew-in regulars in the past are being given first dibs on spaces at this time. We'll see if this will change as we get back in the swing of it all! Thank you all for everything that you do for our active military and veterans! Happy Quilting! Debbie G., QOV Coordinator Quilt Show - ALERT
Wednesday drop off is no longer at 721 N. King St., Xenia It's now at 492 W Second St., Xenia from 5 to 7. Same time, just a new and better location. No Steps!! If you know of a quilter who has died after the 2018 quilt show, please contact Shari B. immediately to see if there is still time to submit their quilts. Quilts will need to have labels on them and you will need to receive a receipt/pink slip for pick up. Important reminder! It is imperative that you retain your pink slips. You will need those pink slips in order to pick up your quilts after the show. No exceptions. Shari/Sherry, Quilt Show Co-Chairs Quilt Show Volunteers To all MVQG members that have volunteered for the quilt show – well, THANK YOU!! You are all awesome. As your co-chair to the Quilt Show, I want to say again thank you to all the volunteers. Let’s make this a successful show. See you soon. Sherry G, President News from Vice President For our May meeting, we will have a presentation on the winning quilts from our show. Sandi Blackwell will join us in June. There are still a few seats open for the Wednesday workshop; be sure to stop by and see me if you need to pay for the workshop or would like to sign up. I will also have information for our July and August meetings and speakers. Also, beginning in July and moving forward, if you sign up for a workshop and are unable to attend, you must give at least two weeks prior notice in order to receive a refund. We understand that life happens, however, this is a common practice and last-minute cancellations doesn’t allow for filling the seat. This ultimately costs the guild and causes us to pay the difference since our teachers charge a flat rate. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks! Sandy H, Vice President See everyone at the quilt show. Next regular guild meeting is Tuesday, May 10, at 7 p.m. at the Knob Prairie Church in Enon. Those who received ribbons are asked to please bring their award-winning quilts to the May meeting. |
