From the President and Vice President:
A big thank you to our own Bonnie M for last month’s Turning Twenty presentation and hosting her sew-in events in the following week. For the Guild, using the Turning Twenty pattern, ten Quilts of Valor (QoV) were started and are in the works to deliver to our QoV Chair, Patty H. In addition, cutting material and assembling into kits was also accomplished and will be provided to the QoV chair, Patty H.  Please see Patty if you are interested in participating in any way to build, finish and quilt the QoV.  She has additional information in this newsletter.
A big THANK YOU as well to Debbie B. who volunteered at our last meeting to take over the Membership Chair position.  We also had Tina F. volunteer to help Debbie at the table on the Guild meeting nights.  As you are signing in at our May meeting, make sure you stop at the Membership table and welcome both.
Tere H. has been our Membership Chair for several years – her excellent service has been vital to the success of our Guild. You will still see Tere around the Guild meeting and events!
Announcements:
  • Our next Guild meeting is on Tuesday, May 9, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
  • We are doing a food carry-in for Cinco-de-Mayo. Our sign-up sheet was lost last month, so if you signed up, please remember to bring a Mexican-themed dish to this event.   PLEASE DO NOT BRING CHIPS AND SALSA OR DESSERT.  Chips and Salsa will already be provided so no need to bring those items.  Also, Desserts are not needed as a sheet cake will be purchased.
  • This month we will also be holding a Board Meeting at 5:30 p.m. on May 16 at Sharing Stitches in Xenia.
  • We are always looking for volunteers!  There is no shortage of ways to join in to help.   We are actively seeking leaders for the Guild Advertising Director and folks to help Mary Ann with sign-ups for upcoming events.  There are also multiple other support activities if you would like to be more involved with the Guild.
  • Please think about sharing your skills with others.  We are actively seeing local talent to use at several future Guild meetings – the next opportunity will be our July meeting.  Please think about talent that could be shared in 15-minute demos.  More info and sign-ups at the Guild meeting.
  • On the Road Again Quilt Challenge:  Participation is optional, but this is fun and challenging!  New members most welcome to join in…. a great way to team up and get to know folks.  A hand-out and more discussion at the Board meeting.
  • The Liz Granberg-Jerome Hexified Panel Workshop will be rescheduled to early 2024.  Ms Granberg-Jerome sends her regrets but unavoidably had to reschedule due to family illness.
  • Become a sponsor of the Guild!  For Quilting Businesses – advertising in the Miami Valley Guild Website is an excellent way to reach the hundreds of people who are Guild members!  Become a Sponsor–yearly cost is just $20 year. Please contact Michelle Pandzik  ([email protected]) or Kim Gros ([email protected]) for more details.

May Guild Meeting
  • We are very pleased to announce our guest speaker is Cassandra Ireland-Beaver, a renowned fiber artist. She is a mostly modern quilter, pattern designer and quilting educator based in west-central Ohio.  Her award-winning quilts have been in more than 30 shows, numerous publications, and four quilts reside in the permanent collection of the National Quilt Museum. Cassandra’s patterns use traditional and/or foundation paper piecing techniques to create dynamic and unique quilts. Cassandra will be sharing samples of her beautiful paper piecing creations. Check out her work online – there are multiple sites to preview her work.
  • We will also be passing a basket raffle around for a 50/50 draw.  50% will be collected for Guild costs of underwriting various activities. We plan on returning the other 50% in the raffle as two portions – 25% for each winner.
  • Show and Tell!  Please bring your works of art to show to others.  We are all inspired to see all the beautiful quilts, bags, and other unique items made by all the creative folks.

Upcoming Events:
MAY
May 10 “Raise the Roof” Workshop:  Ms Ireland-Beaver will present “Raise the Roof” foundation paper piecing class on May 10.  It will be held at Enon Knob Prairie Church.  Cost is $50 for members and a $12 pattern fee (pattern fee paid to the instructor).  Non-members pay an additional $10 for the class.

May 16, 5:30 pm- 7:00 pm:  MVQG Board Meeting, Sharing Stitches

JUNE
June 13 Guild Meeting:

OTHER GUILD NEWS

COMMUNITY QUILTS
Thank you to all you ladies who did binding on the quilts and returned them to me.  I donated 32 quilts to Hospice and have 8 more to go to Jeramiah's Letter. Hospice is always in need of the small lap quilts. They go through about 250 a month. At this point, I don't have any completed quilts or quilts that need binding.  If you have any you would like to donate, bring them to me at the next meeting.
Carol G., Community Quilts Chair

QUILTS OF VALOR
Thank you, everyone, for helping with the Quilts of Valor.  We will need extra help in the next 6 months.  We not only supply quilts to Veterans thru the National Quilts of Valor but we supply quilts for 2 gatherings: 1 this summer and 1 this fall.
If you like to do hand binding, quilting, or coming to the sew-ins, please send me an email with what you would like to help with.
Our May Sew-ins this month:  The May 4 Xenia Sew-in is full.  We have seats available for the 3rd Wednesday (May 17) Sew-In (10 am – 3 pm) at Crestview Baptist Church, 6600 Salem Ave., Clayton.
Please me an email if you want to participate: [email protected]
