From the President and Vice President:
A big thank you to our own Bonnie M for last month’s Turning Twenty presentation and hosting her sew-in events in the following week. For the Guild, using the Turning Twenty pattern, ten Quilts of Valor (QoV) were started and are in the works to deliver to our QoV Chair, Patty H. In addition, cutting material and assembling into kits was also accomplished and will be provided to the QoV chair, Patty H. Please see Patty if you are interested in participating in any way to build, finish and quilt the QoV. She has additional information in this newsletter. A big THANK YOU as well to Debbie B. who volunteered at our last meeting to take over the Membership Chair position. We also had Tina F. volunteer to help Debbie at the table on the Guild meeting nights. As you are signing in at our May meeting, make sure you stop at the Membership table and welcome both. Tere H. has been our Membership Chair for several years – her excellent service has been vital to the success of our Guild. You will still see Tere around the Guild meeting and events! Announcements:

News from the President/Vice President I want to start this month off with huge hugs and "Thank you" to all of our members who work so hard to make our guild a success! From the lectures to the retreat, you are all AWESOME! "A force to be reckoned with " is what my grandfather would have called you all!!! March winds (and tornados) have been blowing our way but sunshine is on the way! Our Madame President Michelle was smart enough to take a month long sabbatical to Florida! That means two things...first, she is smarter than me. Second, that leaves you guys stuck with me! I will be emceeing the meeting without my other half of the M&M's. Lol. If you have any info for me to cover, please call me or email this week before Friday. Our meeting this month will be our Scrap Bag Challenge. These were the bundles purchased at our meeting tables. The challenge was to make an item that had no less than 75 percent from that bundle. If you are entering your item, please have it to the building by 6 p.m. They will be registered and given a number. That number helps us tally the vote. We will be awarding a first, second and third prize based on the popular vote. When you arrive and sign in on our membership roster, you will be given a token. That token gets your favorite item number written on the back. You will drop that in the bag next to the item. During the meeting these will be tallied. After our speakers, we will have show and tell. Then the winners will be presented their award. Our speaker this month comes from the Columbus area. She is presenting their group’s "Survival" quilt. They will be selling the patterns for their charity. It was very generous of Leslie to come this far and give us her time. April Programming April 11 will be our "Turning 20" lecture and trunk show with our own Bonnie Moore. If you have any of these quilts, please see Bonnie before our March meeting. She will be featuring examples and prepping for our upcoming April classes. If you are coming to the Wednesday workshop (April 12), it will be at Bethel Community Church. Cutting is from 12 to 3 p.m.; sewing from 3 to 9 pm. We are doing these quilts for QOV so this is a free workshop day. We will be using donated red, white and blue fabrics. If you want to make your own quilt, there will be a $25 class on the Saturday, April 15. Bonnie will give more details at her lecture in April. May Programming May brings Cassandra Ireland-Beaver with her trunk show during the guild meeting on May 9 with her “Raise the Roof” foundation paper piecing class on May 10. We have 11 slots left! If enough members sign up, it will be held at Enon Knob Prairie Church. Cost is $50 for MVQG members and a $12 pattern fee (payable directly to the instructor). Non-members pay an additional $10 for the class. The checks for this workshop will be collected at our March/April meetings. I am watching for her bundle info to forward to you, so be sure your email is listed correctly when you pay. Since I am running the meeting, I will have another member collecting at the workshop table. Bonus Program May is also our bonus class with Liz Granberg-Jerome from Gypsy Dreamer Quilts with her "Hexified panels" class. This will be on May 13. This class offers a one- or two-day option. If you are purchasing a precut mini kit ($15), you only need the one-day option ($45 for MVQG members; $55 for non-members). If you want to bring your own panels, you would need the two-day option ($75 for MVQG members; $85 for non-members). Liz offers other sized precut kits on her Etsy site. Liz offers videos on the Timeless Treasures site also. The class teaches the 60-degree equilateral triangle. You may bring your own or she is offering her mini (5 1/2 inch) for $15. See calendar for flyer with more details. Liz is delightful and I encourage you to take advantage of her classes. The Saturday class will be at Bethel Community Church from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday is a TBD by how many members are signed up. This is a lot to absorb so we will be publishing more in our future newsletters. We look forward to lots of great days to get to know you all better! Stay safe, M&M (Michelle & Mary Ann) RETREAT Well, another annual retreat is over, and I hope everyone had a great time. I know I did! I would like to thank all my committee members without whom the retreat is not possible. I would also like to announce that Cindy R. has agreed to be the chairperson for the retreat next year. I am sure that she will have sign ups soon for her committee. If you haven't participated in the planning of the retreat, please consider joining the committee. It is very rewarding, and we have a lot of fun getting everything together. If you are new to the guild, this is a great way to get involved and make some new friends. Carol G., 2023 Retreat Chair COMMUNITY QUILTS I will have more quilts that need binding at the next meeting. Please consider taking one or more quilts to finish. I will also have several quilt tops that need to be sandwiched, quilted and bound. Thank you to all those that took quilts last month. Your time and effort are greatly appreciated. Carol G., Community Quilts Chair QUILTS OF VALOR First, I want to thank Debbie G. for her 10 years of dedicated service and for her support. Debbie will be missed but we are lucky she will be available to help while I continue the work she started. While we haven’t had sew-ins since Dec 2022, everyone has been hard at work with piecing, quilting, binding, making labels and presentations. Thank you and I am looking forward to working with everyone. We will be starting our monthly Sew-ins beginning in April. They will be the first Thursday (April 6) at Sharing Stitches, 492 W. 2nd St., Xenia and the third Wednesday (April 19) at Crestview Church in Clayton, 6600 Salem, Clayton both from 10:00 am – 3:00 pm. Please send me an email if you want to participate: pattyhardin78@gmail.com Patty H., QOV Chair QUILT SHOW We are gearing up to start reaching out to vendors for our 2024 quilt show. If anyone is interested in helping Barb C. out and learning the ropes, please let Emilie T. or Barb C. know. Our goal is to have letters out to past vendors to give them first shot at a booth and potentially their same location. Our deadline will be September 1 and then we will start reaching out to potential new vendors if there is still room. If you are interested in being an Ambassador or volunteering for the guild table at the October 12-14, 2023 Sewing Expo, let us know (Emilie T., Peggy D. or Maggie M.) and we can provide the information. I realize October seems far off but it will be here before you know it. We will have printed information as we get closer to the event as well. Thank you to the ladies that attended the meeting on February 28! We got a lot of good information and ideas from you. Emilie T, Quilt Show Chair Reminder that our start time has changed! We are starting the meeting now at 6:30 p.m. (vs 7 p.m.). See you all at 6:30 on Valentine’s Day… 14 Feb!

Please come out to support their generous offer! April: Bonnie Moore (member): Turning 20 Quilt demo and follow-up workshop. More information at the February Guild meeting. I look forward to meeting and getting to know each of you! Michelle and I look forward to "Our Year of the M&M's" !!! Stay Blessed, Mary Ann C., Vice President Info on Dalphene Parks/February Speaker Ms. Dalphene Parks comes to us from a very travelled path from her Tennessee roots thru Utah, California and settling down in White Oak, Virginia. She is a prolific quilter. Her walls sport ribbons from fairs and quilt shows with her recent addition of the National Quilters Award of Merit. She is known for her talent with feed sacks and Kaffee Fassette fabrics, as well as scrappy pieced originals. With decades of experience, Ms. Dalphene is a delight to be around. Ever so humble she is a country girl who grows flower bulbs and posies. Whether that is in her garden or her heart, you will find a treasure to take home with you! She is as generous a heart as you will find. So come fill your heart with her love and joy of all things pieced! Be sure to sign up at the January meeting for her very affordable workshops. I'm sure they will fill quickly. Quilt of Valor News The year 2023 will be a year of change for Quilts of Valor, but has the potential to be the best year yet! I recently announced that I would be stepping aside after ten years of leading the Quilts of Valor Project for the guild. Fortunately, Patty H. (who has been involved for many years) has accepted the role of Coordinator, and we are all looking forward to her new ideas and great energy in continuing to inspire and organize all of us to honor our military. We are on hiatus during the month of January, and Patty and I will be transitioning the supplies and paperwork during February. Quilt of Valor Sew-Ins will resume in March (Patty will send that news in February), as will awards and presentations. I know that the wonderful guild support will continue for this project!! So here are the numbers for 2022: 81 Quilts of Valor awarded 23 National Website Requests 16 Guild Requests 5 4 Paws for Ability Requests 6 20th Helicopter Ops Reunion Requests (St. Louis Reunion - this will be in Dayton this year in August!) 15 Crestview Baptist Church (Clayton) Requests 16 Beavercreek Senior Center Requests 31 Army 28 Air Force 15 Navy 7 Marines (First year ever that there has been more Army than Air Force awards!) Many thanks to all of you individually for your overwhelming participation - piecing, quilting, binding, making and writing labels, block drives, awarding quilts, donating fabrics, money, and time, etc. During these 10 years, together we have awarded over 600 Quilts of Valor in the Miami Valley and beyond. My fondest takeaway from these years has been the friendships made and deepened, both within the guild and with the award recipients and their families. Being a part of the healing and comfort that these quilts bring is so rewarding and I hope that you all have the opportunity to be involved in some way this year! Debbie G., QOV Chair Raffle Quilt News Just a reminder to those of you who graciously took one or more of the blocks for the raffle quilt to work on. A special thank you to Connie Combs who does a lot of the quilting for both Community Quilts and Quilts of Valor! Also, thank you to all of you who help with the bindings. This is truly a community effort! Carol Gibson, Community Quilts Chair BIOS ON OUR NEWLY APPOINTED PRESIDENT AND VICE PRESIDENT I am thrilled to be involved with the Miami Valley Quilting Guild and excited to be your next President. I have been a member of the Guild for 4 months! I joined to make new friends and learn more about quilting. What a surprise to now find I am very much jumping into the Guild in this role as President. I dabbled in quilting many years ago while living in Los Angeles. During this time, I made just one quilt…it never really took hold and at the time, I had a very busy civilian career working for the Air Force. But I had acquired a small stash of projects, which moved with me several times and I kept my used Bernina 1560. Fast forward about 18 years… I retired in 2018 and now had lots of free time. And then COVID isolation hit in early 2020…perfect time to unpack those projects and my machine that I had been carting with me for so many years. I am now hooked! In these past 2 years, I have made many quilts, bags, table runners…and acquired a wonderful Bernina 820…you get the picture. I love this art! I look forward to growing my skills and precision, and learning and friendships. I am very fortunate to be partnering with Mary Ann, who was also elected last month as Vice President. Together we will make a good team. We have a great year ahead. I look forward to this next year. Michelle P, President-elect **************************************************************************** As Michelle stated, we are VERY excited for what the New Year will bring! I look forward to meeting you all and making new friends. My husband has lived in Medway for many years and is the local C.P.A. He was previously G.S. and retired from the Air Force at Wright Patterson. I moved here from Pennsylvania. Previously I had lived in Virginia. I belonged to quilt guilds and church groups in both places. Being a military family means you learn to grow where you are planted. I have travelled the world since I was 17 because of the military and my job with Amtrak. I recently retired after 33+ years. I'm happy to be home! I am new to MVQG. I helped to intake quilts for the show and then joined as a member. I found the group to be friendly and generous. Your helpful nature won me over immediately! I have loved quilting since I was a child taking naps under my grandmother's quilt frame during the quilting bees. I hope we will have time to enjoy a few more of those. Lol! Please let me know what interests you. I am a physical versus digital girl. I will be setting up a suggestion box at the meeting so I won't miss any of your input. I look forward to our year as a team. Thanks for your support. Mary Ann C, Vice President-elect Reminder that, due to the church being a polling location, we will NOT be meeting next week. Our next meeting will be December 13 and will begin at 6 p.m. for our potluck.
News from President Hi, everyone! Have a wonderful and blessed Thanksgiving and see you in December at our potluck get together. Remember, we will have more $5 bags for sale and a show and tell. Sherry G, President Congratulations to our new President and Vice President! Be sure to welcome our newest President and Vice President at the December potluck: Michelle P. as President and Mary Ann C. as Vice President. These two ladies stepped up at the October meeting and the guild members unanimously welcomed them aboard. Congratulations and we look forward to great things. News from Vice President Reminder about our two challenges. Fabric Bag Challenge Using fabric scrap bags purchased at the October guild meeting, create a unique quilt using the guidelines below. The quilts/wall hangings will be presented/displayed at the March 2022 guild meeting. You may only enter one item for each scrap bag purchased. You will receive a ticket for each block made (limit 3) for a chance to win the entire bundle of blocks. There will be one or two winners, depending on number of overall blocks submitted. October’s meeting will prove to be a busy time, please see the following: 6-7 p.m. Retreat sign-ups AND fabric bag sales. 7 p.m. Meeting begins with the following: New President nominations AND Vice President nominations.
Sherry G., President and Sandy H., Vice President Community Quilts At the October meeting, I will have some more quilts that need binding. Since we don't have a meeting in November due to Election Day, I would ask that if you take a quilt to bind that you wait to return it to me in January. Due to the holidays and guests coming to my house, I won't have room to store them and I won't have time to take them to be donated. Thanks. Carol G., Community Quilts Chair Quilt Retreat 2023 Just a reminder that we will begin taking registrations for the Quilting with My Peeps retreat at the October meeting. As many of you know, these spots fill up quickly and we only have 78 spots available. You will need to make at least the $50 deposit in order to pick your seat. Be sure to choose your seat carefully. Spots fill up quickly and you won’t be able to request a different spot later. If you want to sit with friends, they will need to be present and pay their deposit or you can bring their deposit with you. The committee is working to make this another great retreat and look forward to Quilting with our Peeps! Carol G., Retreat Chair Quilt Show 2024 Raffle quilt block kits will be available at the October meeting to sign out for you to take home and work on. Each block is paper pieced and we ask that they be returned without trimming being done. Deadline for completion and return is the January meeting. There are 25 blocks total so your help would be greatly appreciated. If for any reason you complete the blocks prior to January and would like to turn them in or can’t make the January meeting, please reach out to me and arrangements can be made to get the blocks from you. Thank you! Emilie T., Quilt Show Chair Quilt of Valor News The October 11 guild meeting is our turn-in date for our Scrap Busting Block Drive! We have 20 members who are participating and we look forward to seeing the blocks that everyone has made! Some of you have already turned in your blocks and we have made a few tops already with some of the sets. If you already turned in your blocks, please stop by the QOV table at the meeting to pick up your "Thank You"! If your blocks are not done, or you won't be at the meeting, please e-mail me and we can work out an alternative solution. Thank you to all who participated!! The other big news is that we have a new Quilts of Valor coordinator! Patty H., a guild member who has long worked with our Quilt of Valor group in sew-ins and presentations, has volunteered to lead the project beginning in March 2023!! Patty has mega sewing experience, has a son who is in the military, and she worked at Wright-Patt for many years. She will be a natural at this! We are very excited that she is willing to lead and organize the project. I will continue with sew-ins, presentations, etc. until the end of December. Patty will have neck surgery right after Christmas and will be recuperating for about a month afterwards. The two of us will make the transition of fabric, patterns, computer work, etc. in February and she'll begin sew-ins, presentations, etc. in March. I know that our "regulars" have already pledged their support for Patty, and know that the rest of the guild will as well! Right now, we have two sew-ins a month - one at Sharing Stitches in Xenia and one at Crestview Baptist Church in Clayton. We have kept these sew-ins small during the COVID time, but if you are interested in participating, please let me know! Debbie G, Quilts of Valor Coordinator debgins@aol.com Announcement A fellow guild member wanted to pass along that the owner, Darlene Griffith, of Quilted Christmas, is going out of business. In an effort to downsize her inventory, she is putting hundreds and hundreds of bolts on sale for $6/yd. More importantly, though, she has decided to entertain shoppers in her home on an appointment basis. You are sure to have fun perusing bolts upon bolts of all types of high quality fabrics. Her home is located in Germantown. Please contact her through her website QUILTEDCHRISTMAS.COM to set up your excursion. Guild meeting is coming up Tuesday, September 13, beginning at 7 p.m. Lots going on the next few months. Carefully read the E-News for important information.
NEWS FROM THE PRESIDENT Happy Autumn, everyone! Don’t forget to turn in your budgets for next year. You know who you are. For those that may not know or as a reminder, we need a new President AND a new Vice President starting in January 2023. Please consider stepping up to fill these positions. Our October meeting plan is to have some demos and show and tell. In addition, we will be selling $5 bags of fabric and may even have a challenge coming your way. We will also reveal our Christmas block for December’s luncheon. Remember, there is NO meeting in November. Sherry G, President NEWS FROM THE VICE PRESIDENT Tuesday, September 13, Gyleen X. Fitzgerald, quilter and writer, will give her presentation: Path to Modern. On Wednesday, September 14, Gyleen will teach her Caribbean Star 2 class from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Cost - Guild Members - $45, Non-Guild Members - $50. There is also a pattern fee and required tool; both may be purchased from Gyleen. There are 5 openings for Gyleen's class. Please remember our new policy pertaining to workshop/class cancellations. But after looking at class fees for the Houston International Quilt Show, very few classes are less than $75 with all day classes ranging from $75 to $175. We are very fortunate to have Gyleen and may other national and/or international teachers. There will be no show and tell for September due to our having a national speaker. Looking ahead to our October meeting. It would be great to have you, our talented guild members, share some easy and fun Christmas gift ideas. Please send me an email at mvqgvp22@gmail.com if you would like to participate in a short demo. Show and tell will return at this meeting. Sandy H, Vice President MEMBERSHIP Be sure to let me know if you have changed your email or other contact information so your membership record remains up to date. Thanks. Tere H, Membership RETREAT TIME! It is time to start thinking about our annual retreat. The Retreat Committee has been working on our plan to make sure you have a great retreat. The Retreat will be held at the Wingate Hotel in Fairborn February 18-20, 2023. The theme this year is "Quilting with My Peeps". Click here for registration packet information. We will start taking registrations at our October 11 meeting beginning at 6 p.m. We will have the seating chart there and you will be able to pick your spot, providing, of course, that you have paid your $50 deposit. Spots fill up quickly so if you have plans to sit with friends, make sure you all get your registrations and $50 in early to ensure that you get a spot. We are all looking forward to the retreat and hope that you can join us this year. Carol G, Retreat Chair QUILTS OF VALOR I hope that all of you who signed up are working on your blocks for our Scrap Busting Block Drive!! Please bring your blocks to the OCTOBER meeting - looking forward to seeing how everyone uses their scraps! Thank you for participating! We continue to work on our two big QOV presentations for the fall - 7 quilts for Crestview Baptist Church in Clayton for October and 14 quilts for the Beavercreek Senior Center in November. Thanks to all who are helping with piecing, quilting, and binding (and making pillowcases)! Things are going according to schedule! So, now to the hard part - some of you know that the Ginsburgs are in the process of building a house (getting on one floor, 5 miles away from where we live now), which will hopefully be finished by March-April 2023. Between the building of the house, decluttering and packing up the present house, moving, then getting the present house ready to sell, much has been added to our lives. Because of that, there has to be some subtraction of other things. After coordinating our Quilts of Valor project for the last 10 years, I will be stepping aside at the end of this year. Together, we have honored so many veterans and I'm grateful to all of you for this shared endeavor. Because we have had such great participation in this project, I am hoping that one (or two) people will feel called (as I really do believe that it is a ministry) to coordinate and lead the group/guild in continuing our work, as there are many veterans and active military in the area who would love to be honored with a Quilt of Valor! We have great systems and resources in place, so it is not something where you have to "reinvent the wheel", (plus I'm a phone call away for consultation). The friendships that have been made will always be treasured, and are a wonderful by-product of all of our hard work. If you are interested in helping to continue this project, I can fill you in with the details.
