SHARING STITCHES IS EXPANDING Sharing Stitches has moved from Shari’s home to a commercial building with an elevator. Woohoo, no more stairs to climb unless you want to. The new location is 492 W. Second St., Suite 201, in Xenia. Not only do they offer longarm rental and custom quilting, but they are continually adding fabric by the bolt, pre-cuts, batting and notions. In keeping with their philosophy of making quilting fun, affordable and educational, they are expanding and adding a classroom. Their first class will be a bottle gift bag. Perfect time to get started for Christmas gifts or any occasion depending on the fabric. The quiltsmart interfacing to make the bag is included in the cost of the class. The cost is only $40. Held on Saturday, August 20, at 10 a.m. You can contact them at sharing.stitches@yahoo.com, (937)479-8343, www.sharingstitches.com, sharingstitches on facebook or they’d love for you to stop by and visit. Please send me an email at mvqgvp22@gmail.com if you would like to participate in a short demo. Show and tell will return at this meeting. Sandy H, Vice President Quilts of Valor What a wonderful response to our Scrap Busting Block Drive!! We have 17 quilters signed up to make 12 blocks from our scraps (6 fat quarters each). Blocks will be due at the October guild meeting. Each kit will come with more detailed instructions. Be sure to pick up your kit at the July meeting! If you can't be there, please try to have someone else pick it up for you. We do have a few extra kits, so if you didn't get signed up and would like to participate, please e-mail me at debgins@aol.com. We are already working on a group award for the Beavercreek Senior Center around Veterans Day. If you can help by machine quilting a top, please let me know. We have many additional requests that we are trying to fulfill, and would love to get our tops made into quilts, so that we can honor those who have given so much for our country! Thank you all for your continued support of Quilts of Valor! Debbie G, Quilts of Valor Coordinator News from President
Spring has sprung and here comes summer, please keep hydrated at all times. I want to again welcome all of our new members. We had a very successful quilt show and now the reigns have been passed on to Emilie Theriot and two co-chairs. Speaking for Shari and myself, we had the pleasure of heading up 3 quilt shows with one being cancelled due to the pandemic. Please consider helping again in two years. In the mean time we have 3 more speakers this year coming our way, our Holiday carry-in for members only in December and our next retreat in February 2023. See you soon, Gorby News from Vice President Sandi Blackwell is joining us this month; she will bring many of her wares to sell Tuesday evening at our meeting. The workshop for Wednesday is full. Sharon Resvick will be with us in July for a presentation. Signups began last month for Catherine Redmond in August and Gyleen Fitzgerald in September. Please remember, if you sign up for a workshop and are unable to attend, let me know asap. A month is preferable for a refund; within two weeks, we cannot guarantee a refund. We understand that life happens, however, this is a common practice and last-minute cancellations doesn’t allow for filling the seat. This ultimately costs the guild and causes us to pay the difference since our teachers charge a flat rate. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks! Sandy H, Vice President Quilts of Valor After an absence of two years (you all know why!), Quilts of Valor Block Drive is BACK!! This one is going to be run a little differently this year - I'm really trying to reduce our scrap piles! 1) Block Drive starts at the July 12 meeting and you will hand in your blocks at the October 11 meeting. You will be given a bag with at least 6 compatible fat quarters in it. Your assignment is to add your own background and make 12 of the same block (with the different fabrics) in it. Blocks should be 12½ " UNFINISHED. The block pattern is your choice - classic, stars, connecting blocks (such as 9 patch or Irish Chain), etc. With the blocks being coordinated, it should be easy to finish into QOV tops at the monthly sew-ins. 2) The block drive runs 12 weeks - a block a week! If you are interested, you will need to sign up at the June 14 meeting, so that I will know how many kits to make up. If you won't be at the meeting, but want to sign up, send me an e-mail (debgins@aol.com) letting me know by June 15. Kits will be passed out at the July 12 meeting. Each kit will have more detailed instructions, but if you have questions, please feel free to e-mail me. Speaking of QOV sew-ins, we are in the process of resuming them on a limited basis. Because of some space restrictions, we are keeping them small right now, as we work out the transitions. So the people who have been sew-in regulars in the past are being given first dibs on spaces at this time. We'll see if this will change as we get back in the swing of it all! Thank you all for everything that you do for our active military and veterans! Happy Quilting! Debbie G., QOV Coordinator Quilt Show - ALERT
Wednesday drop off is no longer at 721 N. King St., Xenia It's now at 492 W Second St., Xenia from 5 to 7. Same time, just a new and better location. No Steps!! If you know of a quilter who has died after the 2018 quilt show, please contact Shari B. immediately to see if there is still time to submit their quilts. Quilts will need to have labels on them and you will need to receive a receipt/pink slip for pick up. Important reminder! It is imperative that you retain your pink slips. You will need those pink slips in order to pick up your quilts after the show. No exceptions. Shari/Sherry, Quilt Show Co-Chairs Quilt Show Volunteers To all MVQG members that have volunteered for the quilt show – well, THANK YOU!! You are all awesome. We absolutely can not do this without you. As a reminder, visit the Quilt Show website to check your dates, times and description. Your first name and last initial will be displayed where you have volunteered. Click here: https://www.quiltshowmvqg.com/quilt-show-volunteer-directory.html Kathy S, Quilt Show Volunteer Coordinator News from President Welcome Spring (finally), a Happy Belated Easter and to all mothers a happy upcoming Mother’s Day. As your co-chair to the Quilt Show, I want to say again thank you to all the volunteers. Let’s make this a successful show. See you soon. Sherry G, President News from Vice President For our May meeting, we will have a presentation on the winning quilts from our show. Sandi Blackwell will join us in June. There are still a few seats open for the Wednesday workshop; be sure to stop by and see me if you need to pay for the workshop or would like to sign up. I will also have information for our July and August meetings and speakers. Also, beginning in July and moving forward, if you sign up for a workshop and are unable to attend, you must give at least two weeks prior notice in order to receive a refund. We understand that life happens, however, this is a common practice and last-minute cancellations doesn’t allow for filling the seat. This ultimately costs the guild and causes us to pay the difference since our teachers charge a flat rate. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks! Sandy H, Vice President See everyone at the quilt show. Next regular guild meeting is Tuesday, May 10, at 7 p.m. at the Knob Prairie Church in Enon. Those who received ribbons are asked to please bring their award-winning quilts to the May meeting. News from President
Just a reminder that April’s meeting is all about the quilt show and then a Show and Tell (limit two items each). Many things to touch on to get ready for the show. Also, FYI, the Ohio One Stop Shop Hop is being held at the Nutter Center (3640 Colonel Glenn Hwy, Fairborn) on Friday, April 8, from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. and on Saturday, April 9, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Sherry G, President Raffle Tickets Just a reminder to bring in your money from sold raffle tickets to the meeting. Please push the tickets; more tickets are available if you run out. Revenue from ticket sales help us to get such great speakers at our guild meetings. Kim G, Treasurer and Raffle Quilt Coordinator News from Vice President Special thanks to all those who attended last month’s speaker, Reeze Hanson. Her presentation and class were amazing! For April and May, the quilt show is front and center, but if you haven’t signed up for Sandi Blackwell’s June class yet, be sure to see me at the meeting. There are some pre-cutting requirements and prep for the daylong class. $35 will secure your spot for Sandi’s class and there are still openings. Don’t forget that we will do Show and Tell in April and May. Sandy H, Vice President Quilts of Valor BIG NEWS on the national Quilt of Valor website - as of March 27, 2022, over 299,000 Quilts of Valor have been awarded! On our way to 300,000! Our guild is responsible for over 520 of those awarded!! And to know that over 299,000 individual men and women who have served our country have been recognized, honored, and comforted with their quilts - what an accomplishment for everyone! It gives me goose bumps!! Enough of the exclamation points. This spring has brought new life in our QOV happenings - between the weather, sickness, and life-craziness, we have had lots going on behind the scenes, but weren't able to make many presentations. That is changing now, and we look forward to honoring our servicemen and women as we continue to make and award quilts. Hoping to start up with sew-ins again, and maybe some type of block drive in the future. Will keep you posted!! Debbie G. Quilts of Valor Coordinator Other News Sarah Winningham from SunWatch Indian Village in Dayton, Ohio, is looking for vendors. Their Summer Fest event is June 25 from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Vendor space costs $25 for a 10’x 10’. You will need to bring your own tables and chairs. If you are interested, go to their website at sunwatch.org or contact Sarah directly at swinningham@boonshoftmuseum.org. SCRAPS! SCRAPS! SCRAPS!
We are in need of your scraps. Please bring to the March meeting scraps that we may bundle for sale at the May Quilt Show. Scraps should be at least 5” square, clean and pet hair free. Will also take precuts such as 2½” strips or charm packs. QUILT SHOW NEWS At the April meeting we will be focusing on the procedures for quilt show submissions and recruiting for volunteers. It is very important that everyone attend. Also be sure your membership dues are paid for 2022. You must be an active member to submit a quilt. Raffle Tickets - Everyone is encouraged to sell at least one packet of raffle tickets, whether you buy them yourself or sell to your friends and family. This is one way that we can get such great speakers. If you haven’t already received your tickets to sell, please pick them up at the Quilt Show table at the March guild meeting. PLEASE! We need everyone’s help. NEWS FROM VICE PRESIDENT/PROGRAMMING Thank you for a wonderful February evening; Deb Strain was a plethora of information and is so very talented. We hope to invite Deb back in the future. This month, March, we welcome Reeze Hanson. Her Tuesday evening program is Color Confidence for Quilters. Please join us to learn about color selection and integrating quilt colors. We will not have Show and Tell this month, but save your quilts for April since time will be devoted to sharing your beautiful creations. On Wednesday, Reeze will hold our workshop on Charm Pack Projects (Half-Hex Topper or Triangle Topper). Thank you for the amazing response for the workshop as we are full! If you would like to be on the waiting list, please let me know (mvqgvp22@gmail.com). Please check Facebook or the guild website for workshop information. While you are waiting for the next meeting, visit Reeze's webpage: www.MorningGloryDesigns.com. On June 14, we will welcome Sandi Blackwell. Sandi will speak at our guild meeting and also teach a workshop, Square-agonals Twister Table, on Wednesday. The fee is $35 for MVQG members and $45 for non-members. There are five spots open before I begin a waiting list. Sign up as soon as you can! Sandy H., Vice-President FONS AND PORTER SUBSCRIPTIONS Just a reminder for everyone to renew their Fons and Porter "Love of Quilting" magazine through the Guild because we get $5 for every subscription we send in. Make checks payable to Miami Valley Quilt Guild for $20 and send to Karen Engel at 5259 Olentangy Dr. Riverside, OH 45431. From the President:
So far we've had a rather mild winter but we still need to get through February and March. To reiterate, we will be posting on FB and sending out a mass email around 2 p.m. the day of each monthly meeting if we are canceling the meeting. Start checking for the posting or email around 2:30 p.m. or so. A new directory is underway and simplified from what we've had in the past. If you recall, Ed Chamness had great connections to get our directory done but we no longer have those options. So you will be getting a new listing but be aware, it will look a bit different. Be Safe and Stay Healthy, Sherry G, President Membership Dues Reminder that membership dues must be paid by the February guild meeting. All outstanding members will be dropped from the guild list and not be included in the new directory. Tere H, Membership Chair Retreat info Everyone should have received a listing of what to bring or not to forget to our retreat. If you were unable to print this off, we will have a few copies at the February meeting. Please remember that our meetings as well as our annual retreat is SCENT FREE. It is not mandated to wear masks at the retreat but you are welcome to do so if you feel more comfortable. We will have 2 young men available to help with your equipment upon arrival as well as departure on Monday. Please take advantage of this when you arrive and please don't forget to TIP. They have experience (we've had them before) and will carefully take you inside. Snack table - Due to the pandemic and keeping things as safe as possible, if you bring anything to share for the snack table, please just bring pre-packaged goodies. Please, no homemade items. Name tags – Reminder that everyone will need to wear name tags at the retreat. Please feel free to wear a name tag from a previous retreat or make your own; otherwise sticky name tags will be provided. Games – We will have two types of games, along with the popular Bobbin Game! For one of the games you will need three fat quarters. For the other you will need four items. It can be fat quarters, thread, rulers you don’t use or any other sewing notion. More information about the games will be provided at the retreat. Demo – Kathy will be doing a cord wrapper demonstration at the retreat. You will need at least an 11” x 16” piece of fabric. She will be providing the rest of the materials needed for this project. We look forward to a good time, filled with fun stuff and lots of laughs. Be safe and see you all soon. Sherry G, Retreat Chair Quilt Show Raffle The raffle quilt, which has been named Spring Garden, is finished. Raffle tickets will be available at the February guild meeting. We need everyone in the guild to help sell tickets! Click here to see a picture of the raffle quilt. This quilt was hand-colored using permanent fabric markers. Thanks to Kim and all who helped her to prepare this fabulous quilt. Scrap Fabric – Sheila is collecting scraps to make scrap bags for sale at the Quilt Show. Please start bringing in your scraps to the guild meetings. Make sure fabric is clean, pet hair free and at least larger than 5 inches. Quilts of Valor News We are delaying a number of QOV presentations until March-April, given the amount of sickness going around. Lots of sewing still happening and we’re looking forward to spring when we can hopefully start back up monthly sew-ins! I won’t be at the February guild meeting, so if you have anything to turn in, please hold on to it until the March meeting. Thanks. Debbie G, Quilts of Valor Coordinator News from the Vice President Get ready to enjoy an evening with Moda designer, Deb Strain on February 8. Deb lives locally and will grace us with her art and quilting journey. Her recent fabric line for Moda, Effie’s Woods, is gorgeous! Deb will share original artwork and the accompanying quilts. The word on the street is Deb’s bringing door prizes and lots of items for sale: fabric, panels, greeting cards, etc. So mark your calendar for February 8 at 7:00 p.m. and while you’re anxiously waiting for the guild meeting, here is Deb’s Moda website to check out: https://my.modafabrics.com/designers/deb-strain March brings us Reeze Hanson! Join us on March 8 for a trunk show and presentation entitled, “Color Confidence for Quilters: Or Why You Should Trust Your Hunches.” Reeze will explore basic color theory from a quilter’s perspective and show how to develop your own color confidence based on your instincts and intuition. On March 9, Reeze will give the workshops listed below. The fee is only $25 for both workshops which run from 9-4 at the church. Several spots are still open for this fun and exciting opportunity. If you are interested in visiting Reeze Hanson’s website (or would like to see pictures of the charm pack projects), go to https://www.morningglorydesigns.com/ Charm Pack Projects: Half Hex Topper or Triangle Topper. These are easy projects that only require 1 charm pack and a little bit of yardage for a border. They can be completed in a 4 hour class, but work best in a full day workshop where there is time for additional tips and tricks for using charm packs. Half Hex or Triangle acrylic template (Missouri Star Quilt Co.) are available as a kit in the class. To sign up, email mvqgvp22@gmail.com. From the President
Happy New Year, everyone, I hope this finds you safe and healthy. I wanted to start this year off with some positive thoughts and some encouraging words of wisdom. Here are some famous quotes, famous lines and famous sayings: Use your time wisely Value yourself for who you are Hone your skills Keep your head up Knowledge is power Every moment is a fresh beginning Never regret anything that made you smile And Finally - Aspire to inspire before we expire! May 2022 find us getting back to normal. Have a fabulous day and see you at our next guild meeting. Sherry G, President From the Vice President Quilto! - Love to add to your stash or share some of your fat quarters. Then don't miss Quilto at our January meeting. Each Quilto (like bingo) card is $1; buy as many as you like. Bring your buttons or coins to use as daubers and some fat quarters. For each game, a fat quarter is the prize for a Quilto bingo. Get ready to have some fun! Show and Tell will follow. Sandy H, Vice President RETREAT INFORMATION Retreat is only six weeks away! Make sure you pay your remaining balance at the January meeting. A suggested list of what to bring to retreat will be provided at the February guild meeting. Name Tag Everyone will need to wear name tags at the retreat. Please feel free to wear a name tag from a previous retreat; otherwise sticky name tags will be provided. Games (optional) We will be playing two different games (Saturday and Sunday) – Left/Right/Center requires 3 fat quarters and a new game called Hold/Trade/Kitty requires at least 3 items associated with sewing/quilting. These items should be new or slightly used from your sewing room (please DO NOT purchase for this game). You also may bring more than 3 items if you wish. You are more than welcome to play either game or both (or none if you wish). These are fun little breaks to get you up and moving and making new friends. Suggestions for Hold/Trade/Kitty are thread, sewing notion, pin set, pattern, ruler, etc. Food The January meeting is the deadline to turn in food orders at a guild meeting. Orders can still be mailed if received by February 4; address is on the order food (available on the website: mvqgohio.com). Barb QUILT SHOW Raffle Quilt I have the entire center of the quilt finished. We now need to color the borders. I have booked three dates at the Fairborn Library in the basement meeting room. Any questions - click on email icon below Kim G Chairs Needed We are in need of replacements for the 2024 quilt show. Now is the time to volunteer. You will be able to shadow and learn how the show flows. Get great ideas for the 2024 show. Meet the awesome team members. You are supported in every aspect of the show….you just need to lead and delegate. If you are an organizer, like to check off lists of things to do and have the personality that pays attention to detail without being a micro manager, this is a perfect fit for you. Shari and Sherry can’t express how rewarding it is to plan the show and work with all our wonderful guild members. Shari and Sherry, Quilt Show Co-Chairs COMMUNITY QUILTS Twenty 20 quilts were donated to the relief effort for the tornado victims in Kentucky. Bill's Donuts in Centerville, working with a local church, collected items which have been taken to Kentucky. I know we usually try to keep the quilts to help locally but I felt that the need in hard hit Kentucky was greater this time. Carol G, Community Quilts Chair QUILTS OF VALOR – YEAR END REPORT Our ninth year of Quilts of Valor has been our biggest yet!! We have surpassed awarding 500 quilts as a guild (which included 124 quilts in 2021)!! Go to the QOV section to see breakdown of donations. Deb G, QOV Coordinator Just a reminder that the December 14 meeting is our traditional carry-in dinner which begins at 6:30 p.m. See Mary Lou's announcement under Vice President's News for more details about the December meeting.
